Google has closed its affiliate network for 5 good reason

Veteran Industry will tell you that affiliate email is about relationships. When J.J. Hirschle, director of the Google Affiliate Network (GAN), briefly announced that Google was planning to close the network almost for the fifth time, no one should be surprised, as relations were never Google's strength.

Surprisingly, Google decided to downsize the network. Since today, Google affiliate network joiners and partners have not been welcomed in their boards with an indication that the network is being closed. The things were so "business as usual" that many affilates I know asked themselves at first if it was a fraud.

Google's blaze dealing with the situational awareness would be anticipated if the network were not actively involved. However, it was full of many large corporations, among them Netflix, Orbitz, Fandango, Acer, GUESS, Target, Sam's Club, Wolverine Brands, Under Armor, Patagonia, Kohl's, Citibank and Discover. More than 750 recruiters were involved in the network this past month. 1,000 of them were new.

Googles came to affiliate market later. In 2007, when it purchased DoubleClick, the affiliate network Peromics was added. It took Google nearly a year to incorporate the tool into its user interface and start GAN, making it the third biggest affiliate network after Rakuten Linkshare and Commission Junction. Affiliate advertising focused on establishing relations with tens of millions of small publisher.

It' s a high touches phone, and Google has never really shown any interest in such phones. In view of the size problem, Google's choice to start an affiliate network was always astounding. Initially, Google placed the step in a way that gave clients two different ad management utilities based on Acquisition Per-Purchase ("CPA") (GAN and Conversion Optimizer).

Per Peterson, co-founder of Impact Radius, points out that Google has always had a love-hate affair with affiliate emailarketing. Googles' own algorithm was in constant conflict with the Wild West mindset of the sector. It' s difficult to deny that the wry idea that the introduction of Penguin and Panda last year has made many affiliate pages too spammed.

However, some of them were the same partners that GAN tried to work with. Googles may not be too worried about competition from other affiliate as well. But it' definitely about playing Amazon. Never has GAN had the same affiliate acceptance as the Amazon affiliate programme. Amazon has so many associates (his name for affiliates) in its programme that Amazon advertisements in blog posts have become a mainstay.

Amazon's programme's popularity is due to the comprehensive set of features they have developed with Amazon A-Store. Attempting to replicate this uptime, GAN launched affiliate entities on Google's blogger site last summers, but it was too little too late. What's more, GAN's blogging site was too small. Once Google bought Performics, it resold the very lucrative Performics sales site because it was a conflicting interest.

Although Performics was divested, ownership of an affiliate network still kept Google open for some potentially lawful minefields: Firstly, affiliate policies often go against the FTC regulations, especially with their increasing emphasis on data protection. By circumventing Apple's data protection guidelines and allowing the use of advertising cookie ads, Google has already been fined $22.5 million, which includes affiliate cookie ads.

Following this judgement, GAN paid retroactive compensation to partners whose recommendations were not properly followed up by the network. To Google, as long as it had an affiliate network, it was only a question of getting it to face a more expensive run with the bill. In spite of the closure of GAN, Google is still advertising affilates.

In his contribution, Hirschle clearly points out that the importance of the Affiliate Program (CPA) remains high: "However, ownership of an affiliate network is not on the agendas. There is no need for Google to have the responsibility or the headaches of operating an affiliate network to get consumer to consumer advertising from CPAs.
